I spent 20 years in Strategy Consulting, then 10 years powering it with SaaS solutions. Now tackling the gap between posture and actual change in the Consulting Industry.
Part 1: The Denial Brigade
1. "AI is just another productivity tool like Excel" Excel didn't write your strategy deck, conduct your interviews, or replace your entire analyst pool.
2. "AI will augment us, not replace us" Tell that to the 10% workforce reduction at McKinsey.
3. "This is just hype that will fade" Said every taxi company about Uber, every hotel about Airbnb, and every Blockbuster about Netflix.
4. "We've survived every disruption before" You survived because disruptions took decades; AI is compressing your reaction time to months.
5. "Our brand equity protects us" McKinsey's brand didn't stop them from cutting 5,000 jobs and deploying 12,000 agents.
6. "The billable hour model has worked for 100 years" So did the horse-drawn carriage until it spectacularly didn't.
7. "The pyramid develops talent" You're defending a talent development model while simultaneously making those roles obsolete.
8. "We just need to use AI better, not change our model" Like saying Blockbuster just needed better late fees.
Part 2: The Silver Lining Guild

9. "This will create new types of consulting work" Yes, and your competitors who adapted early will be selling it to your former clients.
10. "We'll wait to see which AI solutions win before investing" By then, you'll be buying market share back at 10x the cost.
11. "Our thought leadership differentiates us" Your white paper about AI Strategy is now being auto-generated by Claude in 47 languages. Joining the AI slop.
12. "The regulatory environment will slow AI adoption" Regulation protects markets; it doesn't reverse technological obsolescence.
13. "Our data assets are our moat" Cute, but OpenAI has more data than your entire firm's 100-year archive.
14. "Clients need us for implementation, not just analysis" AI agents are already orchestrating implementation; you're just more expensive middleware.
15. "Partnership model ensures quality" Your partnership model ensures expensive overhead, not quality.
16. "We have trained everyone on prompt engineering" You're teaching consultants to use tools while competitors are building autonomous systems.
Part 3: The Safety Illusion Club
17. "AI will never grasp the subtlety of CEO coaching" Nor can Uber drivers compete with the old-school, living-memory cab driver who knows every street of the city. And yet you order Ubers.
18. "Our competitors aren't moving fast either" Collective delusion doesn't stop disruption; it just ensures you all get disrupted together.
19. "The firms that invest too early will waste a lot of money" The firms that invest too late will waste their entire business.
20. "We need to carefully work and prepare data before deploying AI" True... except your data will never be perfect, and waiting guarantees irrelevance.
21. "Our culture will not accept this change" Your culture will accept unemployment even less.
22. "The technology isn't mature enough" It's mature enough for your clients to DIY what they used to pay you for.
23. "We'll lose our premium positioning" You'll lose your positioning entirely when clients realize you're overcharging for commoditized work.
24. "Junior roles will evolve, not disappear" Evolution implies adaptation; extinction is also an outcome of evolution.
25. "We're different from other industries" Every disrupted industry thought they were different.
26. "Our IP and methodologies are proprietary" Your "proprietary" 2x2 matrix is now a ChatGPT prompt template.
Part 4: The Head-in-the-Sand Division

27. "HQ have appointed a Global task force to tackle this" The Corp is just as confused as you are, with less operational urgency.
28. "We need consensus from all partners first" Consensus-driven transformation is an oxymoron.
29. "Our clients are conservative and slow to change" Your clients are conservative about risk, not about cutting your inflated fees.
30. "Clients aren't ready for AI-driven consulting" Your clients are already using ChatGPT; you're the one not ready.
31. "We need to see the ROI first" You can't calculate ROI on your survival.
32. "Our partners are too busy to experiment new tools" Your partners will have infinite time when clients stop hiring them.
33. "This is a technology problem, not a strategy problem" Kodak also thought their problem was technological.
Part 5: The Delusional Optimist Club
34. "We partner with AI companies" You're not partnering; you're becoming their distribution channel.
35. "Human creativity can't be replicated" Most consulting isn't creative; it's pattern matching dressed up as insight.
36. "The market will always need trusted advisors" The market needs trusted advisors; it doesn't need your cost structure.
37. "AI can't build client relationships" AI doesn't need to build relationships when it delivers better outcomes.
38. "This is fear-mongering" Fear-mongering would be predicting something unlikely; this is pattern recognition.
39. "We have time to figure this out" McKinsey didn't think they had time to wait, and they're McKinsey.
40. "I'll be retired before this really matters" Congratulations on finding the one honest argument on this list.
Part 6: The Post-Bubble Comfort Club
41. "The AI bubble will burst and everything will go back to normal" Yes, just like how the internet bubble bursting in 2000 made everyone go back to fax machines and Yellow Pages.
42. "AI companies aren't profitable, so this can't last" Neither was Amazon for decades; unprofitability during a land grab isn't the same as technological regression.
43. "The CapEx levels are unsustainable" What's unsustainable is your business model; the bubble bursting doesn't resurrect dead models.
44. "We should wait out the hype cycle" Waiting out the hype cycle is how you guarantee someone else owns the post-hype market.
45. "This is just like the blockchain bubble" Blockchain promised future utility; AI is delivering current utility gains that your clients are already using.
46. "Most AI projects fail, so this isn't real transformation" Most digital transformation projects failed too; the ones that succeeded still destroyed entire business models.
47. "The technology will plateau" Even if it plateaus tomorrow at current capability, it's already good enough to eviscerate half your service offerings.
48. "OpenAI is losing money on every query" OpenAI losing money while disrupting your industry is their problem; you losing clients is yours.
49. "This is a supply-driven phenomenon, not demand-driven" Your clients' Shadow IT usage of AI tools suggests demand is robust; you're just not supplying what they want.
50. "The crash will create a flight to quality - us" The crash will reveal that quality means outcomes, not pedigree.
